The endings alone rule it out. In the film, Katie marries Prince Henry, who is a separate character, and Rumpelstiltskin is the one trying to take her baby. In the clip, the little man is the prince.

Why so many people believed the 1987 caption

  1. Reposts carried the label. Copies of the clip went around titled “Rumpelstiltskin (1987),” and TikTok search filled up with phrases like “Rumpelstiltskin 1987 tip toe.”

  2. The name checks out. Search “Rumpelstiltskin 1987” and a real film appears, with a real cast list and a real poster. That feels like confirmation. It only confirms that a movie exists.

  3. It was built to look old. The video was made in the style of a 1980s fantasy film and first posted as a demonstration of what AI filmmaking can do.

  4. The story fits. A small man, a young woman, a room full of straw. That’s the fairy tale everyone half remembers.

Other guesses went further. Know Your Meme notes that some early viewers took the clip for an old Russian film, and one post on X asked whether David Lynch had drawn on it for Twin Peaks.

It was the first of Cannon’s Movie Tales, a run of live-action fairy-tale musicals shot back to back in Israel to keep costs down. Amy Irving plays Katie, the miller’s daughter. Her brother David Irving wrote and directed, and their mother, Priscilla Pointer, plays the queen.

It opened on 191 screens, and Cannon announced a home video release for June of the same year. Critics were not kind: Leonard Maltin gave it two stars out of four.

Who played Rumpelstiltskin in 1987? Billy Barty

Billy Barty played the title role, and it was his only lead in a feature film. Born William John Bertanzetti in 1924, he stood 3 feet 9 inches and worked on screen from 1927 until his death in 2000, with parts in Gold Diggers of 1933, Bride of Frankenstein, Willow and UHF. In 1957 he founded Little People of America, and he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He is not the dancer in the meme. Barty was 61 when the film was shot. The figure in the clip was generated in 2026 and is not a recording of anyone.

How to check a “vintage” clip yourself

The same four questions settle most “lost old movie” clips. Here is how they play out for this one.

  1. Where is the rest of the movie? A real scene belongs to a film with credits, a running time and scenes on either side of it. Nobody has produced the scene around this dance, because there isn’t one.

  2. Where was it first posted? This clip traces back to a single Instagram reel from August 2026, published by an AI filmmaker as a showcase.

  3. Does the plot match? The clip ends with a kiss and a prince. The film turns on a baby and a name to guess.

  4. Does the cast match? The 1987 cast is fully documented. The figure in the clip isn’t one of them.

Other Rumpelstiltskins it gets confused with

  • Shrek Forever After (2010)

The animated villain, and the source of the 2023 meme where he slides in on a chair.

  • Once Upon a Time

Robert Carlyle’s Rumplestiltskin, spelled with an L-E.

  • Rumpelstiltskin (1995)

An American horror film that shares the name and nothing else.

  • Earlier adaptations

A 1915 American silent film, German versions from 1940 and 1955, and a 1985 animated feature.

None of them contain the tip-toe dance either.
